What is Gateway about?

Gateway is a careers based programme that gets students out into a workplace to see if that chosen industry is right for them. They will do some Unit Standards relating to their work to make their learning more in depth. Your student will be expected to do about 40 hours in the workplace. They will also be expected to catch up on any schoolwork they may miss.

Can you only do Gateway as a subject?

No - you can also do Gateway over and above your timetabled classes. Many students who choose this option do their placement outside of school hours eg. In holidays, so they don't miss any classes. Others choose a day when they might have study last and could go to work from 1.30 - 5pm.

What will my student gain from doing Gateway?

Your student will gain invaluable knowledge and skills about the industry they are in. Hopefully they will be able to have enough information to make an informed decision about their career path. They will make important links with people in that industry which could lead to future referees and mentors. Your student may even gain part time or fulltime work.

How does my student get accepted into Gateway?

Your student needs to be in Year 11, 12 or 13 and work ready. We base this information on their attitude and application to school. They need to be independent learners and able to be self -directed. All students need prior approval from the Gateway team before being accepted onto the programme.
