What is Gateway about?

  • Gateway is a programe that will help you make decisions about your future career path.
  • You will spend time in a work place exploring that career.
  • You will do some Unit Standards of work related to your chosen workplace.
  • At Te Aroha College you can do Gateway as a subject (by prior approval) or you can do a placement over and above your timetable.

Who can do Gateway?

  • Gateway is available for 'work ready' Year 11 - 13 students.
  • You need to be work ready. This means you need to demonstrate that you are:
      • Organised
      • Punctual
      • Honest
      • Polite
      • Able to follow rules etc
  • You need to be able to work independently as it is self directed learning.

How can Gateway help me?

  • Gateway helps you to make some career decisions.
  • You will be placed with an Employer in a chosen industry and you will get to see a realistic view of that job.
  • Along with some workbased learning Unit Standards you will be able to decide if that is for you or not.
  • You will be able to build relationships with people in your chosen profession.
  • You may even get a job out of it.

How many NCEA credits can I get?

  • Up to 30 depending on the course you choose and how self motivated you are.

      • Animal Care
      • Building
      • Early Childhood
      • Electrical
      • Hairdressing
      • Hospitality
      • Journalism
      • Mechanics
      • Nursing
      • Retail
      • Sport Coaching
      • Teaching
      • Tourism
We are constantly adding to this list as more industries provide Units.
  • If you choose to take Gateway over and above your timetable we can organise virtually anything!

What do I need to do if I'm interested in Gateway?

  • You need to go and talk to Jenny Stockley or Linda Merriman.

    It's that easy!

The steps we take:

1. We find a suitable student.

2. The necessary documents are filled out:

  • Student contract.

  • Parental/Caregiver consent.

  • School/Employer contract.

  • Health and Safety checklist completed.

  • Learning plan agreed on.

  • Management of Student School work plan arranged.

3. The days of employment are worked out.

4. Required safety clothing is arranged.

5. Student arrives at workplace with Log Book, which requires filling out each day, and unit standards.

6. We will find assessors to assess the unit standards.

7. Jenny Stockley, the Liaison, will communicate with you regularly and visit as required.
